5 Ways to Design the Best Billboard in the Whole Wide World
Michaela Haight, May 18th, 2026
Here at Meadow, we love to teach great graphic design. These are just a few tips and tricks to make your billboard the very best in the whole wide world!
1. Fill the billboard with as many words as possible
If you don’t fill your billboard with words, how is anyone going to know what your company is or does? For example, people need to be informed that XYZ HVAC company will assist them with their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning needs. How else would anyone know what you do? A list of bullet points about every service your business offers, even though all of those services are implied in the name of your business, is very helpful to customers.
2. Use colors that will blend into each other
A bright color palette might draw too much attention and be too easy to read, so you really want to tone down the colors you use. They should all look similar and not contrast with each other or the environment around the billboard.
3. Use a minimum of 3 contact methods
In this day and age, no one uses Google to search for businesses; they must be looked up in a telephone book, so make sure that your phone number is on the billboard. Be sure to also include your super wordy, personal email address that you first made in 2006, so everyone can get a hold of you. Lastly, include your address for your brick-and-mortar location, including the full mailing address with the city, state, and zip code, so that no one gets lost on their way.
4. Use huge generic photos that will not tell the audience anything specific about your business
Some examples of these large, generic photos would be a close up photo of your company van, a landscape photo of your building, or a photo of your entire team of doctors that you took on your Android. If you use one of these huge, non-descript photos, it will communicate as little as possible with your audience while taking up as much room on the billboard as possible. A win-win!
5. Use a free AI program to generate your billboard layout for you
You know, AI these days can do just about anything, so why not let a soulless algorithm design artwork for your billboard? It’s free and untrained in graphics design, so what can go wrong?
Just kidding! As you can see, these are all incredibly bad ideas for designing a billboard. We recommend all of the opposite practices, but thought it might be helpful to show why these practices are so detrimental to your design. We hope this has been an illuminating exercise!
